Copyright is the one topic creators skip — until a strike lands. Live content is not a loophole: platforms fingerprint audio in real time, and multistreamers need to be extra careful because a violation on one destination can interrupt a broadcast on all of them. Here's the working knowledge that keeps your channel alive.

What copyright covers on a stream

Music, video clips, sports footage, films, and even background radio are protected the moment they're broadcast. "Giving credit" doesn't help, and neither does "not monetizing." If you didn't create it or license it, assume it's a risk.

How a DMCA strike actually works

• A rights holder sends a takedown notice to the platform hosting your stream or VOD.
• The platform removes the content and forwards a strike to your account.
• Three strikes — on most platforms, within a window — and the account is terminated with limited appeal.
• Live streams can be cut mid-broadcast; archived VODs can be muted or deleted.

Safe ways to soundtrack your streams

• Royalty-free libraries. Services like Epidemic Sound, Artlist or YouTube's Audio Library license music for streaming explicitly.
• Platform soundtracks. Instagram and TikTok offer in-app licensed music for live formats — but that license applies only on that platform, which matters when you simulcast.
• Original or commissioned music. One custom track from a producer is a permanent, strike-proof asset.
• Performance-based covers: still copyrighted compositions — license via a mechanical/performance society before performing them live.

Multistreamer rule of thumb: license for the strictest platform you broadcast to. A song cleared on Instagram may still strike you on YouTube or Twitch.

If you get a strike anyway

Read the notice — it names the exact content and timestamp. Remove or mute the VOD, submit a counter-notice only if you genuinely own or licensed the content, and document your licenses in one folder so appeals take minutes, not weeks.
